First painting with rubber stamp technique

This is my first trial doing art with letter rubber stamp. A technique that I have been working and refining since 2011. The first test was done on an A4 size paper using a three layered stencil cutout as foundation. I quickly realized that the size of the paper was key to get details and profound shadings in place. This piece was made with a handmade stamp I was using for making my business card. I later found pre-made alphabet stamp where I could pick and choose my own wording. I found the painting much more interesting when I could incorporate my own thoughts and concepts in the object.

Iranian-Airmail

This is one of the paintings I will display at the spring salon opening. The piece is titled “Iranian Airmail” (2013) and is part of the “Distance of War” series I have been working on during 2013. The basic concept for these painting is to remake exciting airmail stamp from countries dealing with and developing drone technology. It is about a computerized and de-humanized military complex where even soldiers on the ground becomes alienated in their role as saviors. The paintings are made up by compositions of words that are being stamped, using rubber letter stamps and multiple layered stencil and rebuilt into an re-sized modified airmail stamp. This painting measures 52 x 74 cm on aquarelle paper.

More information about the Spring salon exhibition in a bit. Click for further contacts. Hope to see you at the opening, welcome!

You are all cordially invited the our art discussion:

IA art discussion invitation

URBAN ART: THE MERGING OF ART IN
THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPHERES

at
Image Ark Gallery
Thursday 31 October at 5:30 pm
Kulimha tole, Patan

Urban Art is a steady growing form of artistic expression. Rooted in Graffiti and Street Art, it has now expanded to a wide range of techniques and art forms found in most parts of the world. The common factor defining Urban Art is the city: Colors, shapes and the physical structure of the city together with the everyday life and the vibrations of the people living in, create the foundation for what is known as Urban Art.

Urban Art, usually in the public sphere is step-by-step getting access to the private sphere, such as art galleries, homes or the commercial sector. This conversation will focus on the transition of Urban Art from the public to the private spheres.

Casper Johansson, fulltime artist, lived and worked in Burma for 6 years. He will share with Shradda Shrestha, aka Deadline, and Aditya Aryal, aka SadhuX, his experience, technique, and process of creation. Together, they will explore on how this technique can be inspiring while creating a debate on today’s society.

Join us and get updates at the Facebook eventpage. Welcome!

Invitation to Mark my Words exhibition at Gallery Image Ark

You are all cordially invited to my upcoming solo exhibition titled Mark my Words at Gallery Image Ark in Kathmandu, Nepal. The opening will be held on Sunday the 27th of October at 5:30 p.m. The gallery is located at Kulimha Tole, Ward No.9, Lalitpur. My work will be displayed at the gallery until 29th of November. Welcome.

Here are some few word about my exhibition.

Manipulated images, fractions of a context and repetition of words thousands of times – and you start to get the whole picture. The exhibition Mark my words at Image Ark Gallery tells stories of everyday struggles in a rapidly changing society. It is an extract of endless conversations, visualized with words, where the perception of the image conflicts with the message. The result is an illustrated debate where images, words and symbols coexist. With inkpads and alphabetic rubber stamps, using multiple layered stencils, Casper’s art can be defined as ‘retouched realism’. Silent shouts embedded in elements of hope, struggle and resistance.
Mark my words is a prolonged testimony of the transformation in Myanmar/Burma and an extension of the exhibition A thousand words says more than a picture.

For updated and further details pls join us on our facebook event.

Follow me on Instagram for art in progress

Just realized I have forgotten to update the website in a while. But their is a reason for it, well, actually two reasons. Firstly, I am quite busy working on my new pieces that will be part of my first solo exhibition in Sweden. The opening will be on the 1st of June in Gothenburg, Sweden. Details will come very soon. At least I have came up with a title of the show. I am very exited about the whole deal and I am looking forward to see all of you for the opening. If you can´t make it the show will be up until end of June, so we have plenty of time.

The second reason for not updating the site is because I just started to use Instagram. You can find and join me at @duelling_banjos as usual. Since my latest updates have been on Instagram I thought I should upload some of the pictures here as well. Until now I haven´t shown any pictures of the finished pieces, but I have been sharing parts of the process. And here they are, well, some of them. Thank you for all the comments and for following me, it means alot.

All titles are still working titles. As I said. Still processing.

Past week in pictures

I love stickers, especially where they can grow old. Have you seen this on? Do you know the location? (clue: It is Tuesday and I heading down to this place when I am done with the writing)

I delivered my latest painting “U.S. Airmail” the other day. It seems that it will hang next to a Vietnamese propaganda poster and “Breaking Silence” print signed yours truly! thanks for the support once again.

Public and private spaces are shrinking with time, they call it globalization I heard. Today I was working on my representation making business cards in Studio Duelling Banjos (portable version 3.0)

SmileEvilsmile is a good friend of mine. I like him for many reasons but maybe most because he keeps it simple!

I was also published in TuckMagazine with five of my paintings. The text is either written by a computer or a poet on Kitamine. This is what they said about me and my work:

Casper ‘Cap’ Johansson’s art sparkles in a world blurred by blindness. Lost in a never ending prayer of preached progress the voiceless scream in thought against a modernity choking, each of the artist’s pieces bleeding feeling; the passion of belief breathing in a repressed society.

Envious of dream the fight against continues as, in anonymity’s mask, a being bleeds from believing; androgynous to a self the cell society breeds in. Heat freezes in a timed mind as captured in light the image of today’s pensive soul is painted. The body illuminates in intensity, a burning truth through fear piercing, the artist in rich starkness showing life smothered from breathing. Purity weeps in progress painted, mourning life dead in living.

In darkness light through expression explodes. Thoughts run away from trained feelings, an everyday defiance of the mind as in the heart the head beats. To another a differing eye, an opinion caught in fixed misunderstandings as meaning tails off in despair. Johansson delights in creating a future present, the pattern of thought visible to eyes open, each alive in individual definition.

Energy defies fate as blind minds fall from a waiting sky, the artist skilfully placing the viewer in the centre of a suffocating everyday. Set amidst a faceless city representing any and everywhere breathing, nature rebels in being, bleeding colour to the heart of human grieving. In a memorised present, withering life spins against the control it dies from, society repressed in an over populated ideal as collected breath is held from a watching world.

Concealed in disbelief a generation loses sight from a mind mechanical in thought. Tied to ticking eyes the body hides from prying, a blank staring back at an overwhelming world, the artist emphasising humanity’s plight against an improvement created. Faith fights for the glint in each, an indirection sought in the self to an expressive new as, limited by design, technology burns to a soul breathing.

Fiery waves adorn a canvas dark in thought, Johansson lighting an eye’s imagination to minds expanding, the rich white of light sheltering truths; a skin to the blood of fated living. Alive in invention the illusion of believing bleeds to another day blind as coloured from soul, the artist’s heart shines through.

Seeking truth in justice Johansson’s art continues to evolve, his impression of humanity’s struggle against itself profound and piercing.
